Friday, 31 July, 2015 -- Simon McGrahan

Telegraph Obituary

The following was sent in by Mrs Deborah Tomasso, Peter's daughter:

I am sad to advise you that my father, Mr Peter Scopes passed away on Sunday 26th July.  He had been cared for in a residential care home for the last two years if his life, and died peacefully in his bed there.

He was brought up in India, and I think he started at Eltham College in the 1938, but his schooling was interrupted by the Second World War. He was evacuated to Taunton with the school for a short while, before moving back out to India in 1940. He then returned to Eltham College in 1944, first to Taunton and then after the war back to Eltham to complete his certificate which was in 1946.  He gained a scholarship to Jesus college, Cambridge.

He has always spoken so well of his days at Eltham College and was proud to have been educated there.

He remained closely linked to your college, and my older brother, Jonathan Paul Scopes started there in 1969 for his secondary education.

A thanksgiving service is being arranged at 11am on Saturday, September 12th at Peter's church, Emmanuel Church, Hadlow Road, Sidcup DA14 4AA, followed by a light lunch in the church hall.

Peter entered Eltham College as a boarder in 1938, was evacuated with the boarding house to Taunton School at the beginning of the War, went out to India to be with parents and family in 1940, returned to Taunton in 1944, returned to Mottingham with the boarding house in 1945 and left School at the end of 1946, having won a scholarship to Jesus College, Cambridge.  He was the second boy at Eltham College to win such a university scholarship.
