Harvey Herbert Starte

Friday, 31 July, 2015 -- Simon McGrahan

The following was sent to us by Harvey's son Harvey Nicholas Starte:

Harvey Starte (1934-1941)

I have sadly to report the death of my father (and my college alumnus son Dorian’s grandfather), Harvey Herbert Starte.

As I think you know, my father was the son of Baptist missionaries and attended Eltham College when they were serving in the Belgian Congo. He was at the college from 1934 to 1941 and Head Boy of Eltham House at Taunton School when the college was evacuated there. He went from Eltham to Emmanuel College, Cambridge, graduating in Engineering in the normal wartime two years before joining the REME and serving in Italy. I think he was the oldest surviving Old Elthamian when he passed away last Saturday, 18 July 2015, aged 92. He had suffered a third stroke just before Christmas, but thankfully managed to live an independent and active life at his home in West Wittering, West Sussex until the end, only swapping his bicycle for a mobility scooter earlier this year!

There will be a funeral service at the church of St Peter and St Paul, West Wittering, West Sussex, PO20 8AJ, at 2pm on Monday 3 August 2015, and the family would be delighted to receive anyone attending at my father’s home after the service: Moddershall, Elms Lane, West Wittering, West Sussex, PO20 8LW.
