There are many ways that OEs can become involved in Career Engagement. The Elthamians Office work very closely with the Eltham College careers department and much of the engagement benefits the current pupils at school. Careers Forums These are hosted every term at Eltham College and cover a wide variety of industries. Each forum is held in the ABH theatre with six to eight speakers, the audience is Year 9, 10, 11 and Sixth Form pupils. Each speaker talks for around five minutes about their career path, highlights of working in their particular industry and advice on how to move into a similar role. All speakers are invited to join us for supper before the forum and drinks afterwards. Company Visits Over the past two years we have been working with our London based OEs to arrange visits to their company offices for the Sixth form. The visits last for approximately two hours and give the students an opportunity to learn about the company ethos, meet and talk to the staff and gain an insight into different industries and roles within the companies. We have recently been hosted by OEs at Bloomberg (Simon Bigg - 1999), Taylor Wessing (Jean-Michel Beeching - 1980 and Niri Shan - 1987), Encyclopaedia Britannica UK (Ian Grant - 1967), Ark Underwriting incorporating a visit to Lloyds of London (Steve Hill - 1990) BBC Global News (Jim Egan - 1987) and 6 Pump Court Chamber (Stephen Hockman QC 1965). Placements Our Sixth form and university leavers are moving into a challenging work environment, and any experience they can gain via placements, internships and work experience, is a real bonus to them. An example of working with our OE community is the placement that two of our Sixth Form undertook at law firm Bird and Bird in the summer of 2013. Two places were offered by OE Russell Dellar (1987) and the successful applicants went through a full recruitment process, the first time that many of them had written covering letters and CVs, applied for a role and been interviewed. Both pupils returned back to school and shared their experience of working at Bird and Bird with their peers. This placement has now been in place for the past four years and is an extremly popular placement for the Sixth Form students to apply for. Talks to Eltham College Groups and Societies OEs are always welcome to come in and speak to any of the Eltham College groups and societies. Recently, Eamonn Keane (1990) addressed the Economics and Business Society. Professor Stuart Ball (1974) addressed the History Society recently and Ben Ridgeway (2004) spoke to the Economics and Business Society. We are also arranging for Elliot Haynes (1993) to come and speak with a group of Politics A-Level students. Work Experience & Internships (for both current pupils and recent leavers) The school is always looking for companies who will host our Year 11 pupils on their work experience weeks, which take place every June. We also connect our recent leavers with OEs who are able to offer them work experience and internships. In 2012, we arranged for recent leaver Ella Paterson to go on a 8 week internship with The Deborah Hutton Campaign, courtesy of OE Emma Wrafter (1998). Fellow 2012 leaver was put in touch with OE Matt Lewis (1990) who arranged for Louisa to work with him at a Virgin Atlantic Airways launch event in Edinburgh. University Leavers Many of our OEs leaving university are taking up positions in companies where members of the OE community work. The offer to meet with and mentor a new OE ensures that we are supporting our recent leavers through this very important first stage of their careers. If you would like to engage with any part of the OE or Eltham College community from a careers perspective, please contact Helen in the Elthamians Office on email or by calling 0208 851 9840. Much of the recent engagement has come from ideas that OEs have suggested to us, and we are always looking for new and interesting developments in this area.
