Jeanne Marie Cullen

The below information was sent by the son of Raymond and Jeanne Cullen in Janaury 2015.

I am contacting you on behalf of my father, Raymond Cullen (ex Pupil of EC and member of staff for 40 years - retired 1986) to let you know that my mother, Jeanne Cullen passed away on 6 January, aged 89.

My parents ran The Grange junior boarding house for 22 years until 1976 - we, as children, were brought up there! My father first met her in 1947 when she was Headmaster's Secretary at EC and he joined as Woodwork Master, having previously been a pupil. (She herself attended Walthamstow Hall as a girl). They enjoyed 63 years of marriage together.

My parents originally retired to Somerset where they spent 15 years before moving to Suffolk in 2002 to be nearer my sister, Annie (Parry) and family.

Whilst healthy up until her mid-eighties, over the last few years my mother had suffered various mini-strokes and also dementia.  Wonderfully, she never had to go into a care home and spent Christmas 2014 with her family around her, including her five grandchildren ranging from age 5 to 31!

Raymond (also 89) is coping well at the moment, having been my mother's primary carer for the last few years. His address, for anyone who would like to contact him, is:

30 Clarkson Court
Ipswich Road
Woodbridge
Suffolk
IP12 4BF

My mother played a huge role, alongside my father, in the running of The Grange - looking after hundreds of boarders that were in their care over the years. They loved their time at Eltham College and were passionate about their role running the boarding house.

Below is an announcement which appeared in the Daily Telegraph;

CULLEN - JEANNE MARIE (nee Gypps) died peacefully in Ipswich Hospital on 6 January 2015 aged 89. Beloved wife of Raymond, loving mother of Richard (deceased), Ann and James.  Proud grandmother of Lizzie,Tom, Will, Henry and Hugo.
