Assorted Photos

Points of Interest from the Year

Do you have any memorabilia from your time at Eltham, were you in any teams, or in a play, did you take pictures on school trips, sports day, or Leavers Day? We would love to see them. Please either send them for us to scan and return, or better still email them to our Archivist:

Mark Stickings       ms@eltham-college.org.uk

We are keen to identify as many people on the 1989 school photo as possible.

If you can help to fill in any of the gaps, add a first name or can point out an error, please send an email to Mark Stickings.

Points of Individual Interest Speech Day Supplement 1988-9

1. The 76 pupils in last year's Fifth Form achieved a remarkable average of 9.8 subject passes each at Grades A-C in the first GCSE examinations: almost 70% of those were at the top two grades, A and B.

2. Last year's 82'A' Level candidates achieved an average of 2.9 subject passes each: 60% of these were at the top 2 grades.

3. In the last 4 years Eltham College pupils have received a total of 70 offers of places at Oxford and Cambridge Universities. 71 of the 82 leavers in 1988 went on to Higher Education.

4. News has just come through that recently left Eltham College pupils have been distinguishing themselves at University. Former Headboy Paul Stanley, now at Downing College Cambridge, achieved the best First Class in the demanding Law school and was thus elected Scholar of his College, whilst Senior Prefect Helen Price achieved the best First in Management Studies at Loughborough University and was elected Student of the Year there. Graham Ogg, reading Medicine at Oxford, was placed in the First Class and won the Martin Wronker Prize. Other ex-pupils to be placed in the First Class include: Robert Douglas- Fairhurst reading English at Cambridge; Nicholas Barberis and Martin Andrews reading Mathematics at Cambridge; Richard Hart, Murray Brown and Alan Hart all reading Natural Sciences at Cambridge; Patrick Brown reading History at Cambridge, John Saunders reading Law and Richard Ball reading Modern Languages, both at Cambridge University.

5. Paul Stanley, having gained 11 grade `A's in his '0' Levels and 3 top grades in his `A' levels, produced the best 'A'L History papers in his chosen London University syllabus (thus winning the Royal Historical Society's Frampton Prize), and he also earned the best marks in the country in the Cambridge Board 'A'L English examination in 1988, for which he was awarded the Marie Overton Prize for English.

6. Upper Sixth Former Edward Egan was a member of the 3 man team which won the U21 team event in the National Modern Pentathlon Championship in July. Last October in the U17 group at the Lewisham 8th Annual Pentathlon Championships Edward helped his team, Lewisham Lions, to 1st position. He now goes to Oxford University where he joins two former pupils of the school, his brother James and Duncan Crowdy, both Oxford half-blues in the Pentathlon. It is likely, therefore, that Eltham College pupils will provide exactly half of the Oxford University Modern Pentathlon team this year!

7. Lower Sixth Former Katherine Willis won the Girls' 80 metres Hurdles at the Kent Schools Athletics Championships in June. She thus became County Champion and earned selection for the England Schools Cham pionships where she came 6th. Leon Galley won 3rd place in the Senior Long Jump in the Kent Schools Championships.

8. In June the U 14 Chess team, last year's Kent U 13 Champions, won the final of the prestigious London Championships. On the way to the Finals they overcame all rivals - St. Olave's, Dulwich College, Alleyn's, Emanuel, Sutton High School and City of London School (twice). In the final they defeated City of London 4-2: international player Anil Rao won all 7 of his matches on Board 1.

9. For the first time in living memory an Eltham College pupil, Nicholas Barberis, now reading Mathematics at Jesus College Cambridge, found himself in the Guiness Book of Records. The citation reads: Nicholas Barberis achieved a total of 27 top grades whilst at Eltham College, passing 20 '0'/'AO' and 7 `A' Levels all at grade A between 1984 and 1988.

10. The Junior School continues its splendid tradition of raising money for Charity e.g. over £2000 was donated during the year to the World Wildlife Fund for Nature.

11. In 1988, swimming against the top 63 Independent Schools in Great Britain at the Seymour Hall Marylebone, Eltham College won the magnificent Bath Cup and Otter Medley. In May 1989, defending both trophies, with a very young team including a Third Former and two Fifth Formers, the Eltham College team qualified as 2nd fastest in the free-style event and then went on to win the trophy (the Bath Cup) in the final, defeating such teams as Tonbridge, St. Paul's and Coleraine. In the evening of the same day the team tied equal first with Bishop Stortford College in the Otter Medley.

12. In the North West Kent Athletics Championships held at Norman Park in Bromley the Senior Team came 1 st in its section, thus retaining the title from last year: individuals who shone were Leon Galley (winner of the 100 metres and the Long Jump), Andrew Biro (the Shot Putt), Philip Packer (the High Jump), Phillip Burch (the 1500 metres), and Katherine Willis (the Intermediate Hurdles). 20. The First XV had a splendid season defeating local rivals St. Dunstan's, Trinity School, Colfe's, Dartford G.S., John Fisher School, Wimbledon College, Bancrofts and others, but the highlight of the season was the narrow (107) victory achieved under floodlights against the powerful Marlborough College team in December.

Stephen thus became Young Performer of the Year, a status which entitles him not only to guaranteed fees of over £2500 and the real possibility of contracts with BBC Radio and TV, but to 40 prestigious professional engagements up and down the country at such venues as Westminster Cathedral and St. George's Windsor.

27. Having won their way through the SE Regional Finals, 3 Eltham College Biathletes achieved honours in the National Biathlon Finals held in Dunfermline. Eltham College was the only school (out of 60 finalists) to have representatives in each age-group.
