JUST 8 NAMES TO GO!
We’re nearly there. I have now received over 100 e-mails about the 1968 photo – thanks to all of you who responded. I’ve tried to reply to each of you.
At the time of writing (September 2010) we are missing only 8 names out of over 470. That’s very impressive. Now let’s try to get the job finished!
Some of the 460+ we already have could still be wrong, or incomplete (no first name, wrong first name). This is not an easy task, as I sometimes receive contradictory information. Please let me know of any error or improvement you spot, however minor. I’m sorry if I appear to have overruled some of you – do get back to me if you are sure I have got it wrong.
I am aware – and apologise – that there are three areas of dodginess: 1) B51 covers two boys, now shown as left and right; 2) the same is true of F39; 3) the labels D49-51 and E52-54 are not well placed, leading to confusion over the correct numbers for Barnaby Lenon et al. Please look at both groups of numbers before writing in about those six names.
All we need now is to meet up again (though sadly at least six of the boys and many of the staff are no longer with us), stand in the same places and take another photo of you all. Now that would be something. Obviously we encourage reunions here and would be pleased to facilitate one, whenever that might be.

Points from the minutes of the Eltham College House Committee 1968There were 558 boys in the school, including 127 boarders. 87 of these pupils were in the Junior School , including 17 boarders. 38 boys were sons of missionaries or ex-missionaries. Increased salaries for non-teaching staff included £365 (up from £330) per year for the Grange Matron and £775 (up from £725) for the Headmaster’s Secretary. 17 boys would be going to Oxford and Cambridge. A skiing trip to Austria took place. The potato-peeler in the kitchen had broken down and, being very old, was beyond repair. The meat slicer was about to suffer a similar fate. Thieves had attempted to open the safe in the Bursar’s office one night, using explosives, but the door had jammed, preventing access. An inspection by an HMI had concluded that kitchen conditions were far from satisfactory and the mid-day meal was “relatively inadequate”. Daily consumption of free milk was approximately 70 pints daily. Health inspectors had commented unfavourably on the swimming bath, and its future looked bleak. School lunch in the senior school cost one shilling and sixpence per day. Dr A T Neuff replaced Mr M J Long as Head of Chemistry. There was a serious problem providing sufficient Geography teaching in the Sixth Form.
